Sound‑insulating materials are types of materials, components, or structures that can block sound transmission or reduce the energy of transmitted sound. They are typically characterized by their substantial mass and high density, such as steel plates, lead sheets, concrete walls, and brick walls. Sound insulation performance is expressed in decibels (dB).
Sound-absorbing materials must be acoustically matched to the acoustic impedance of the surrounding medium, allowing sound energy to enter the material without reflection and ensuring that the majority of the incident sound energy is absorbed. Typically, this is achieved by incorporating fillers containing numerous air bubbles or by adding metallic microspheres, among other methods.
