Overview of the EU Mattress Regulation
If you plan to sell mattresses in the European Union, your products must comply with EU mandatory legal requirements, as well as any additional requirements from buyers. Therefore, comprehensive mattress testing is necessary to ensure consumer safety and health. SATISFY provides a wide range of mattress testing services, including flammability testing, performance testing, safety assessments, and certification services.
EN 597-1 Flame retardancy test ( Cigarette )
EN 597-1 A test method has been established to determine the flammability of mattresses, upholstered bed frames, or mattress pads when exposed to a lit cigarette. This standard does not apply to air mattresses or waterbeds.

EN 597-2 Flame retardancy test ( Flame )
EN 597-2 specifies a test method for determining the flammability of mattresses and upholstered bed bases when exposed to a gas flame. This standard also excludes air mattresses and waterbeds.

REACH
REACH Regulations control the levels of chemicals and heavy metals in consumer products, including mattresses. For example, products containing excessive levels of lead, cadmium, or phthalates are prohibited from being placed on the EU market. These substances may be introduced during manufacturing, processing, or unintentionally incorporated into products.

Mechanical properties
EN 1725 :1998 Safety Specifications and Test Methods for Household Beds and Mattresses
EN 1725 applies to bed frames fitted with standard mattresses or mattresses supplied together with bed frames. Depending on whether the bed frame and mattress are supplied as a set or separately, the test evaluates the frame and mattress support structures, including springs, slats, webbing, and sheets, through impact and static tests at different points of the mattress to assess strength and durability.

EN 1957 :2012 Household furniture - Bed and mattress - Test methods for determining functional characteristics
EN 1957 uses a drum test to evaluate mattress durability. A large cylindrical drum rotates at a speed of 16 ± 2 cycles per minute, applying 30,000 cycles to the mattress and/or bed frame. The firmness and hardness of the sleeping surface are measured using a specialized load cell before and after testing. The test evaluates potential defects in the overall bed structure, including broken springs, frayed wires, tufting defects, displaced padding, creasing, and loose ticking.

Textile label
Textiles sold in the European Union must comply with EU labeling requirements. Textile labels are mandatory and must clearly indicate the composition of all textile fibers used, as well as disclose any non-textile components of animal origin. Labels must be securely attached to the product, such as by sewing. This requirement applies to products containing at least 80% textile fibers by weight, including clothing, furniture fabric covers, mattress fabric covers, and camping tents.

Chemical hazard
Regarding the migration of chemical elements from mattresses used in cribs and children’s beds, EN 16890 requires testing according to the migration limits for certain elements specified in EN 71-3.
