    Baby Safety Alliance

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JPMA) is a national trade organization in the United States representing the prenatal to preschool infant and juvenile products industry. JPMA represents companies that manufacture, import, and/or distribute baby products across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The concept of JPMA originated in 1959, when the US. government imposed an automobile tax applicable to car safety seats. A group of juvenile product manufacturers came together to advocate for the industry and demonstrate that the tax was unfair, leading to its repeal. Following this, manufacturers recognized the need for an official association to protect their interests and promote the development of the entire industry. As a result, a group of manufacturers began addressing common industry challenges. In 1962, the organization was formally established as the recognized Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) and was granted its organizational charter.

As a US. national trade organization, the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) developed JPMA in response to the increasing regulatory oversight and scrutiny of children’s products. JPMA is based on the requirements of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and US. federal regulations (such as CFR and CPSIA), and also incorporates requirements from major retailers. In addition, it focuses on upstream testing conducted during the manufacturing and pre-market certification of juvenile products.

JPMA currently certifies more than 2,000 products across 29 product categories. Each certified product must undergo sample testing in independent laboratories annually or whenever material changes occur, to ensure compliance with the highest safety requirements. The JPMA seal on a product indicates that it has passed independent laboratory testing and follow-up on-site inspections of the manufacturer’s production line, demonstrating compliance with regulatory requirements.
