The CertiPUR-US® foam certification program is administered by the nonprofit Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam, Inc. It is a certification program for the flexible polyurethane foam (slabstock and molded) used in upholstered furniture, and bedding products such as mattresses and pillows. Certified foams meet CertiPUR-US®program standards for content, emissions and durability. Foam samples are taken at the manufacturing stage and are analyzed by independent, accredited laboratories.
CertiPUR-US ® Certified foam has been tested by an accredited independent laboratory and meets the following standards:
| ●Made without formaldehyde. ●Made without ozone depleters, ●Made without phthalates regulated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. ●Made without mercury, lead or other heavy metals. ●Low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million). ●Screened for relevant chemicals, including flame retardants, that are classified as carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxins and are harmful to human health. |
What types of flexible polyurethane foam can be certified?
|
● Biobased foams (slabstock only) ● Conventional foams ● Conventional FR polyether foams (sharing the same flame retardant package) ● High resilience foams ● Super-soft (low density/low index) conventional foams – 25% IFD ≤ 15 lbs (65 N) and density ≤ 1.5 lbs/ft3 (24 kg/m3) ● Viscoelastic (memory) foams ● Viscoelastic (memory) foams with gel ● Branded foams (any of the categories listed above with an exclusive branded name) ● Other foams (subject to approval) |
Rigorous and transparent foam certification process
The certification process typically takes two to three months from start to completion, including emission testing and analytical testing at a laboratory, which takes approximately one month.
(1) Confirm that your foam formulation meets the certification requirements according to the current Technical Guidelines as published on the website at certipur.us/technicalguidelines.
(2) Identify the foam family to be certified.
(3) Express intent to certify a foam and complete initial screening by CertiPUR-US® program administrators.
(4) Select one of the accredited laboratories listed in the Technical Guidelines and submit foam samples for testing. See Technical Guidelines for specific information on samples and packaging.
(5) Complete necessary physical performance tests (see Technical Guidelines for details).
(6) Understand, sign and submit complete application materials and submission requirements as outlined in the Technical Guidelines.
(7) After review and notification of acceptance, complete payment of fees.
(8) Upon certification and payment, an individual page for the foam producer will be created on the CertiPUR-US website. The page will include the name of producer, their logo, website and sales contact information. The page will also feature a downloadable certificate listing the name of the producer, foam family certified, lab report number and date of next renewal. These materials will be removed if renewal date expires. Links to foam producers’ individual pages are also listed on the program's Find a Foam Producer page, and in the online directory and mobile app.
Does the foam require periodic certification?
Certified foams must be re-certified every six months during the first year and annually thereafter.
