    CE Certification for Electrical Wires and Cables

    According to the EU Construction Products Regulation CPR (305/2011/EU), since June 10, 2016, electrical wires and cables exported to EU countries are required to comply with the requirements of EN 50575, and CE certification has become mandatory from July 1, 2017.     Introduction to Test Methods:

    EN ISO 1716 Gross Heat of Combustion (PCS) Test for Cables

    Under standard conditions, a test specimen of a specified mass is placed in an oxygen bomb calorimeter with a constant volume to measure the heat of combustion. The oxygen bomb calorimeter is calibrated using standard benzoic acid. Based on the temperature rise measured during the test, and taking into account all heat losses and the latent heat of vaporization under standard conditions, the heat of combustion of the specimen is calculated to determine its non-combustibility performance.

     

    EN 50399 Bundled Cable Flame Propagation Test

    The test is conducted according to EN 50399-2-2. The length of each bundled cable specimen shall be no less than 3.5 m, and the non-metallic material volume shall reach 1.5 l/m. This standard also includes tests for the total heat release (THR) and total smoke production (TSP) of cables.

    EN 60332-1-2 Vertical Flame Propagation Test for Single Electrical Wires and Cables

    The EN 60332-1-2 vertical flame propagation test for single electrical wires and cables is considered to be passed only when both of the following requirements are met:

    (1) The damaged area at the upper end of the cable shall not exceed 50 mm from the lower edge of the upper fixing clamp.

    (2) The damaged area at the lower end of the cable shall not exceed 540 mm from the lower edge of the upper fixing clamp.

    If either of these two requirements is not met, the EN 60332-1-2 test is considered to have failed.

     

    EN 61034-2 Cable Smoke Density Test

    The test is conducted in a 27 m³ test chamber equipped with a photometer, ignition source, and other necessary equipment. The cable specimen shall be placed in a straight position and pre-conditioned for 16 hours at a temperature of 23 ± 5 before testing. The test duration is 40 minutes, and the smoke density is evaluated based on the minimum light transmittance measured during the test.

     

    EN 60754-2 Acid Gas Emission Test After Cable Combustion

    The EN 60754-2 standard evaluates the acidity of halogen gases generated during cable combustion. The acidity is determined by measuring the pH value and conductivity of an aqueous solution. According to the test procedure, the combustion furnace is preheated to 800, and a quartz tube containing the specimen is inserted into the furnace while timing begins simultaneously. During the first 5 minutes of combustion, the pH value and electrical conductivity are measured every minute, and measurements are then taken every 5 minutes for the following 25 minutes.Generally, halogen-free cable materials have a pH value greater than 4.3 and a conductivity value lower than 10 μS. A lower pH value indicates a higher acidity level of the halogen gases generated by the material. It should be noted that when the HCl content is greater than 2 mg/g and less than 5 mg/g (which complies with the requirements of IEC 60754-1), the pH value of the aqueous solution may also be lower than 4.3.
