FSC-COC Forest Stewardship Council Certification
FSC (The Forest Stewardship Council), also known as FSC certification, is a non-profit international organization initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It was established in Toronto, Canada in 1993. Its mission is to unite people around the world to address forest damage caused by irresponsible logging and promote responsible forest management and development.
FSC certification is divided into two types: FM and COC.
FM (Forest Management): Forest Management certification applies to organizations managing natural or plantation forests and can also be provided to supply chain partners.
COC (Chain of Custody): Chain of Custody certification applies to companies using forest products, such as furniture manufacturers, publishers, pulp industries, and all timber product manufacturers, to demonstrate the traceability of wood materials.

The Chain of Custody (COC) refers to a complete chain from the forest to the final consumer, including all processes of production, processing, and transportation until the product reaches the end user.
Introduction to COC Certification
Obtaining COC certification demonstrates that all certified products can be traced back to their raw material sources, proving that the wood materials originate from responsibly managed forests and avoiding the use of virgin wood from the following five unacceptable sources:
1.Illegally harvested wood;
2.Wood harvested in violation of traditional and human rights;
3.Wood from forests where management activities threaten high conservation value forests;
4.Wood from forests converted into plantations or non-forest uses;
5.Wood from forests where genetically modified trees are planted.
COC certification has specific requirements for each stage of product production, including the following three basic processes:
• Obtaining certified raw materials – including verification of supplied materials and record keeping to ensure traceability;
• Processing and handling certified materials – including storage, classification, grading, production, and processing conversion;
• Selling certified products – including maintaining written records and managing product documentation.
Obtaining COC certification can enhance brand image, differentiate products from competitors in the same industry, and increase consumer confidence in purchasing decisions. At the same time, COC certification is also a way to protect forest resources and represents a commitment to social responsibility.
COC Certification Process
1.Application for Certification – Timber processing companies or trading companies decide to apply for FSC certification. SATISFY develops an FSC certification plan.
2.Contract Signing – Based on the preliminary information provided, SATISFY signs a contract with the applicant.
3.Certification Preparation and Consultation – A third-party certification consulting organization provides professional guidance to help the company successfully pass the certification.
4.Audit and Evaluation – An on-site assessment is conducted. The main evaluation contents include: product identification, product separation (certified and non-certified materials), establishment of records, training and employee information, selection of applicable company systems, and correct use of FSC labels and trademarks.
5.Certification Report – After the assessment, a report is prepared (approved or requiring improvement). The report is submitted directly to the certification decision committee for final evaluation.
6.Certification Issuance and Registration – Companies that pass the audit are awarded the certificate. The use of the certificate in market activities and the registered FSC label mark will be strictly controlled.
7.Annual Surveillance Audit – An annual on-site audit will be conducted for the company. The main audit areas include records, control of material and product inputs and outputs, and the use of FSC labels.
Certificate Validity
The certificate is valid for 5 years. During the validity period, an annual surveillance audit is required. After the certificate expires, a re-evaluation is required to renew the certificate.
The certificate may be suspended or withdrawn under the following circumstances:
• Major non-conformities are not corrected;
• Improper use of certificates or trademarks;
• Cancellation of surveillance audits;
• Non-conformities identified during certificate suspension are not corrected;
• Financial requirements are not met.
Certification Fees
