ISO 354 (GB/T 20247) Standard Introduction
ISO 354(GB/T 20247) specifies a method for measuring the sound absorption performance of materials and objects in a reverberation room. ISO 354(GB/T 20247) measures the difference in reverberation time before and after placing the test material in the reverberation room, and calculates the sound absorption characteristics of the material to evaluate its sound absorption capability. This standard helps optimize indoor acoustic environments, provides guidance for the design and application of sound-absorbing materials, improves acoustic quality in spaces, and reduces noise pollution.

ISO 354(GB/T 20247) applies to the following fields
◎Architectural acoustics (such as conference rooms, theaters, and sports arenas)
◎Noise control (such as office spaces, industrial facilities, and transportation facilities)
◎Testing of sound-absorbing material products (such as acoustic panels, carpets, ceiling materials, etc.)
ISO 354(GB/T 20247) Reverberation Room Requirements
(1)Room Characteristics
Shape: An irregular polygonal structure is recommended to minimize the influence of standing waves.
Volume: Generally ≥200 m³ to ensure a sufficiently diffuse sound field.
Walls: Constructed with highly reflective materials, such as concrete or brick, to minimize the influence of background sound absorption.
(2)Sound Source:
An omnidirectional loudspeaker shall be used to ensure uniform sound distribution throughout the reverberation room, with a frequency range covering 100 Hz to 5000 Hz.
(3)Microphones:
Multiple omnidirectional microphones shall be used and installed at different locations to accurately record changes in sound pressure levels within the sound field.
ISO 354(GB/T 20247)
The test principle is based on measuring the difference in reverberation time before and after placing the test material in the reverberation room, and calculating the sound absorption characteristics of the material. The specific test method is as follows:
(1)Empty Reverberation Room Measurement (Without Test Specimen)
Without the test material installed, random noise is generated inside the reverberation room. After the sound source is switched off, the time required for the sound level to decay by 60 dB is measured, which is defined as the reverberation time T1. Data is collected from multiple microphone positions, and the average reverberation time is calculated.
(2)Reverberation Room Measurement After Installation of Test Material
The test material is placed on the floor of the reverberation room. The exposed test area shall be between 10 and 12 m². The same measurement procedure as the empty room test is performed, and the new reverberation time T2 is recorded.
ISO 354(GB/T 20247) Calculation of Sound Absorption Coefficient
(1)The equivalent sound absorption area A is calculated according to the Sabine equation:

A - Equivalent sound absorption area of the material (m²)
V - Volume of the reverberation room (m³)
T1 - Reverberation time without the test material installed (seconds)
T2 - Reverberation time with the test material installed (seconds)
(2)The sound absorption coefficient α is then calculated:

S is the surface area of the test specimen (m²)
Sound absorption coefficients are measured at different frequencies, such as 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, and 4000 Hz. The average value is then calculated, and a sound absorption coefficient curve is generated to evaluate the sound absorption performance of the material across different frequency ranges.
