BS EN 12520: 2015 Furniture - Strength, durability and safety - Requirements for domestic seating
BS EN 12520 is a European furniture standard specifying requirements for domestic seating performance.
BS EN 12520 specifies minimum requirements for the safety, strength, and durability of all types of adult domestic seating. The tests are based on use by persons with a body weight not exceeding 110 kg.
BS EN 12520 does not apply to ranked seating, non-domestic seating, office task chairs, office visitor chairs, educational institution seating, outdoor seating, or linked seating systems covered by other European standards.
BS EN 12520 excludes durability requirements for cushioning materials, casters, backrests and tilt mechanisms, as well as seat height adjustment mechanisms.
BS EN 12520 excludes requirements related to electrical safety.
BS EN 12520 excludes requirements related to ageing, degradation, flammability, and ergonomics.
The requirements for domestic seating are relevant to the following users: domestic seating manufacturers, designers, testing organizations, and quality assurance organizations.
BS EN 1022: 2018 Domestic Furniture - Seating - Determination of Stability
BS EN 1022 specifies test methods and requirements for determining the stability of all types of seating furniture. It applies to seats intended for adult users with a body weight not exceeding 110 kg, regardless of purpose, material, design, structure, or manufacturing process.
BS EN 1022 also describes methods applicable to children’s seating and heavier adult seating by modifying the test loads and loading positions.
BS EN 1022 does not apply to children’s high chairs, table-mounted chairs, or bath seats covered by other European standards.
The determination of seating stability according to BS EN 1022 is relevant to seat material manufacturers, seat manufacturers, and testing laboratories conducting seating evaluations.
BS EN 12521: 2015 Furniture - Strength, durability and safety - Requirements for domestic tables
BS EN 12521 specifies minimum requirements for the safety, strength, and durability of all types of domestic tables intended for adult use, including tables incorporating glass components.
BS EN 12521 does not apply to desks, office tables, non-domestic tables, educational institution tables, or outdoor tables covered by other European standards.
BS EN 12521 does not apply to tables where the tabletop is not securely attached to the supporting structure.
BS EN 12521 does not provide an assessment of the suitability of storage functions incorporated into domestic dining tables.
BS EN 12521 excludes durability requirements for casters and height-adjustment mechanisms.
BS EN 12521 excludes requirements related to electrical safety.
BS EN 12521 excludes requirements related to ageing and degradation.
The safety requirements for domestic tables are relevant to the following personnel: domestic table manufacturers, furniture manufacturers, glass manufacturers and suppliers, product designers, and quality control teams.
EN 14749:2016+A1:2022 specifies safety requirements and test methods for all types of kitchen and bathroom storage units, household storage furniture, including TV cabinets, and their components.
EN 14749:2016+A1:2022 does not apply to non-domestic storage furniture, office storage furniture, industrial storage furniture, food service equipment, retail storage furniture, or industrial storage cabinets.
EN 14749:2016+A1:2022 does not apply to furniture covered by EN 71-1 Safety of Toys — Part 1: Mechanical and Physical Properties.
EN 14749:2016+A1:2022 excludes requirements related to ageing resistance, degradation, flammability, and electrical safety.
EN 14749:2016+A1:2022 excludes safety factors dependent on building structures. For example, the strength of wall-mounted units applies only to the cabinet itself and its components, including wall-fixing hardware. Walls and wall-mounted fixtures are not included.
EN 16139:2013+AC:2013 specifies safety, strength, and durability requirements for all types of non-domestic seating intended for adult users with a body weight not exceeding 110 kg, including office visitor chairs.
EN 16139:2013+AC:2013 does not apply to ranked seating, office task chairs, educational institution seating, outdoor seating, or linked seating systems covered by existing European standards or draft standards. It also does not apply to industrial work chairs.
EN 16139:2013+AC:2013 excludes durability requirements for cushioning materials, casters, backrests and tilt mechanisms, and seat height adjustment devices.
EN 16139:2013+AC:2013 excludes requirements related to ageing, degradation, and flammability.
EN 15372-2016 Furniture—Strength, durability, safety—Requirements for non-domestic tables
EN 15372 provides requirements and test methods for evaluating the strength, durability, and safety of non-domestic tables. The standard specifies safety, strength, and durability requirements for all types of non-domestic tables, including tables incorporating glass components.
EN 15372 does not apply to office desks, worktables, educational institution tables, or outdoor tables covered by other European standards.
EN 15372 does not provide an assessment of the suitability of storage functions incorporated into non-domestic tables.
EN 15372 excludes durability requirements for casters and height-adjustment mechanisms.
EN 15372 excludes requirements related to electrical safety.
EN 15372 excludes requirements related to ageing and degradation.
The safety requirements for non-domestic tables are relevant to glass distributors, the glass manufacturing industry, furniture manufacturers, and users in various environments, including light-duty applications in hotel bedrooms, churches, and libraries; general applications in hotels, cafés, restaurants, public lobbies, banks, bars, and meeting rooms; as well as heavy-duty applications in nightclubs, police stations, transport facilities, hospital common areas, casinos, nursing homes, sports venues, prisons, and barracks.
BS EN 16121 specifies requirements for the safety, strength, durability, and stability of all types of non-domestic storage furniture.
BS EN 16121 is intended to ensure the durability and reliability of non-domestic storage furniture.
BS EN 16121 does not apply to domestic storage furniture, office storage furniture, industrial storage furniture, kitchens, food service equipment, retail storage furniture, or industrial storage cabinets.
BS EN 16121 strength and durability requirements do not apply to building structures. For example, the strength of wall-mounted cabinets applies only to the cabinet itself and its fixing components. Walls and wall-mounted fixtures are excluded.
BS EN 16121 excludes requirements related to resistance to ageing, degradation, and flammability.
The requirements for non-domestic storage furniture are relevant to furniture manufacturers and quality control organizations.
ASTM F 2057-2019 Standard safety specification for chests, door chests, and dressers
ASTM F2057 is intended to reduce injuries and fatalities among children caused by the tip-over of freestanding clothing storage units. The standard applies to units including, but not limited to, chests, drawer cabinets, wardrobes, dressers, desks, door chests, and similar storage units with a height of 27 inches (686 mm) or greater.
ASTM F2057 does not apply to shelving units such as bookcases or entertainment furniture, office furniture, dining room furniture, jewelry cabinets, under-bed drawer storage units, or temporary furniture not intended for bedroom use. It also excludes central furniture and laundry room storage units, bedside tables, and built-in units intended to be permanently attached to buildings, as defined in ASTM F2598 as clothing storage units.
ASTM F2057 applies to products intended for use by children under 5 years of age, including children aged 5 years.
ASTM F 2598-2022 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Clothing Storage Chests
ASTM F2598 specifies performance requirements and test methods for evaluating the safety of clothing storage chests.
ASTM F2598 aims to minimize accidents and injuries to children resulting from normal use, as well as reasonably foreseeable misuse or abuse.
ASTM F2598 applies to products commonly known as cedar chests, hope chests, blanket boxes, keepsake boxes, and other similar rigid enclosed containers designed and marketed as airtight storage products for clothing, blankets, linens, keepsakes, or other household items.
16 CFR 1261 Safety Standard for Clothing Storage Units
16 CFR 1261 addresses the risk of death and injury associated with the tip-over of clothing storage units, particularly involving children.
16 CFR 1261 applies to common categories of clothing storage units, including but not limited to cabinets, dressers, wardrobes, closets, drawer cabinets, and door cabinets.
According to the definition of clothing storage units, 16 CFR 1261 may not apply to shelving units, office furniture, restaurant furniture, laundry baskets, built-in closets, and single-compartment enclosed rigid storage cases.
16 CFR 1261 exempts certain requirements for storage cabinets and portable storage units.
Key requirements of 16 CFR 1261 include interlock device requirements, stability requirements, marking and labeling requirements, performance and technical data labeling requirements, and restrictions on excessive storage loading
