    ISO 27447 2019 Testing Principle

    ISO 27447:2019 specifies a test method for evaluating the antibacterial activity of semiconducting photocatalytic materials by measuring the reduction of viable bacteria after ultraviolet (UV) irradiation.

    Solid (non-porous) materials, including textiles and other substrates, may contain photocatalytic materials or be coated with photocatalytic films. The standard evaluates the antibacterial performance of these materials by measuring changes in the number of microorganisms on the surface after exposure to light and ultraviolet radiation.

     

     
     

    ISO 27447:2019 Scope of Application

    ISO 27447 is applicable to various types of photocatalytic materials used in building materials, including ceramics, tiles, flat panels, boards, textiles, and other related products.

    ISO 27447 is not applicable to powdered, granular, or porous photocatalytic materials.

     

     

    ISO 27447:2019 Test Overview

    ISO 27447:2019 specifies two test methods. One method involves inoculating a bacterial suspension onto the surface of the test material and covering it with a glass slide, which is suitable for fabrics and textile products. The other method uses a transparent adhesive film to cover the inoculated surface and is suitable for evaluating flat surfaces, sheets, and similar materials.The glass-slide method uses Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae as test organisms, while the transparent-film method uses Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

     

     
     

    For both methods, the test specimens are placed in petri dishes, and the samples are divided into the following groups:

    ◉ Blank control group: Samples without photocatalytic materials;

    ◉ Photocatalytic samples and control samples: Placed in the same test chamber without ultraviolet irradiation for 8 hours;

    ◉ Photocatalytic samples and control samples: Placed in the same test chamber and exposed to ultraviolet irradiation for 8 hours.

     

     
     

    ISO 27447:2019 Test Procedure

    1.Test bacteria (Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus) are inoculated onto the surfaces of the test samples and control samples. Other bacterial strains may also be used upon request.
    2.The samples are exposed to ultraviolet light and dark conditions for a specified period. After exposure, viable bacteria are extracted from both the test samples and control samples and counted.
    3.The antibacterial activity of photocatalytic materials after ultraviolet irradiation is evaluated according to the calculation method specified in ISO 27447:2019.
    4.The antibacterial performance under dark conditions is also evaluated and classified according to the requirements and calculation method specified in ISO 27447:2019.

     

    ISO 27447:2019 Light Intensity Requirements

    According to ISO 27447:2019, the ultraviolet light intensity shall be confirmed before testing. The selected UV intensity is used to simulate different application environments, with four light intensity levels corresponding to different usage conditions.

    ◉ Ultraviolet light intensity: 0.25 mW/cm²
    Simulates an environment where photocatalytic reactions occur during daytime near windows or under supplementary lighting conditions.

    ◉ Ultraviolet light intensity: 0.10 mW/cm²
    Simulates indoor daytime conditions (approximately 1.5 m from a window), such as areas near windows during early morning or before sunset.

    ◉ Ultraviolet light intensity: 0.010 mW/cm²
    Simulates indoor daytime conditions (approximately 3 m from a window).

    ◉ Ultraviolet light intensity: 0.0010 mW/cm²
    Simulates environments without windows (indoor lighting only) or nighttime indoor environments under artificial lighting only.
