The four new children’s furniture standards were jointly developed and issued by the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) and the Furniture Retail Quality Group (FRQG).
FRQG includes representatives from most major furniture retailers in the United Kingdom. The group is chaired by FIRA and is responsible for developing standards and guidance documents addressing areas of concern within the furniture industry that are not fully covered by British or European standards.
BS 8509-2008+A1:2011 Children’s beds for domestic use – Safety requirements and test methods
BS 8509:2008+A1:2011 is a British Standard that specifies safety requirements for fully assembled and ready-to-use children’s beds.
BS 8509:2008+A1:2011 is intended for children’s bed designers, manufacturers, suppliers, testing organizations, and health and safety professionals.
BS 8509:2008+A1:2011 provides guidelines and recommendations to ensure the safety of domestic children’s beds with a maximum internal width of 1000 mm and a maximum bed base height of 400 mm.
ASTM F1912-2021 Standard Specification for Safety of Bean Bag Chairs and Bean Bag Covers
ASTM F1912 aims to reduce the risks of suffocation and strangulation associated with bean bag chairs and bean bag chair covers.
ASTM F1912 applies to bean bag chairs and bean bag chair covers with or without zippers.
ASTM F1912 covers two types of bean bag chairs: (1) bean bag chairs designed for refilling, and (2) bean bag chairs with permanently sealed closures that are not intended for refilling.
ASTM F1912 does not apply to products containing foam fragments or fibrous fillers used as internal filling materials.
ASTM F2613:2022 Standard consumer safety specification for children's chairs and stools
ASTM F2613 specifies test requirements for evaluating the structural integrity and performance of children’s chairs and stools, as well as labeling requirements.
ASTM F2613 is not applicable to products intended for commercial use or products without rigid frames, such as bean bag chairs or foam chairs.
ASTM F2613 does not apply to seats with restraint systems, infant or toddler rockers, children’s step stools, or children’s potty chairs. The terms “unit” or “product” refer to children’s chairs or stools.
ASTM F2613 applies to chairs and stools intended for use by a single child who can enter and exit the product independently, with a seat height of 15 inches or less, with or without a rocking base.
Products manufactured after the approval date of ASTM F2613 shall not be labeled or represented as complying with this specification unless they meet all applicable requirements before and after testing.
NF D60-300-1 specifies general safety requirements for tables, seating, storage units, and beds intended for children’s domestic indoor and outdoor use, with a length exceeding 1500 mm.
NF D60-300-2 specifies safety requirements and corresponding test methods for indoor and outdoor seating intended for domestic use by young children.
NF D60-300-3 specifies safety requirements and corresponding test methods for domestic indoor and outdoor tables intended for young children, with a tabletop height of less than 600 mm.
NF D60-300-4 specifies safety requirements and test methods for children’s beds intended for domestic use by infants who can independently leave the bed and with a reclining length of 1500 mm or less, excluding cribs with bassinets.
ASTM F 1838-2019 Adults and children's Plastic Chairs for outdoor Use
ASTM F1838 specifies nationally recognized performance requirements for outdoor plastic chairs for adults and children, including Class A (residential) and Class B (non-residential) products.
ASTM F1838 does not cover conditions that affect chair performance outside the manufacturing environment.
ASTM F1838 is not applicable to recliners, multi-position chairs, upholstered chairs, or other types of furniture.
ASTM F1838 covers product performance related to outdoor weathering, impact resistance, static load, rear-leg strength, and other relevant aspects.
BS EN 17191:2021 Children ’ s furniture — Seating for children — Safety requirements and test methods
BS EN 17191 specifies safety requirements and test methods for seating products designed specifically for children who can walk and sit independently.
BS EN 17191 applies to domestic and non-domestic child seating products, including those used in day-care centers and indoor or outdoor environments.
BS EN 17191 applies only to the seating function. If the seat includes additional functions or can be converted into another product, additional requirements may apply.
Applicable seating products include, but are not limited to, chairs, benches, stools, bean bags, lounge chairs, rocking chairs, recliners, armchairs, folding chairs, and swivel chairs.
BS EN 17191 does not apply to children’s high chairs, childcare products such as inclined cradles, seats used in educational institutions, wheelchairs, electrical safety devices, or child seats designed for children with special needs.
BS EN 17191 is applicable to child seat designers and manufacturers, importers and suppliers, and end users.
