USP-NF 2021, General Chapter 51 Antimicrobial Effectiveness Testing
Antimicrobial preservatives are substances added to aqueous pharmaceutical products to inhibit the growth of microorganisms. For non-sterile dosage forms, preservatives may be added to protect products against accidental microbial contamination introduced during or after manufacturing.For sterile products packaged in multi-dose containers, antimicrobial preservatives are added to inhibit the growth of microorganisms that may be introduced during repeated withdrawal of individual doses.All sterile multi-dose products should contain one or more suitable antimicrobial preservatives.
USP-NF 2021, General Chapter 61 & 62 package Microbiological examination of nonsterile products: microbial enumeration tests
The tests described in USP-NF 2021, General Chapters 61 and 62 allow quantitative enumeration of viable aerobic microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi capable of growing under specified conditions.
The primary purpose of USP-NF 2021, General Chapters 61 and 62 is to determine whether a substance or preparation complies with established microbiological quality requirements. When used for this purpose, the specified sampling procedures and interpretation criteria shall be followed.
USP-NF 2021, General Chapters 61 and 62 are not applicable to products containing live microorganisms. Alternative microbiological procedures, including automated methods, may be used provided that their equivalence to the compendial methods has been demonstrated.
AATCC 100-2012 Antibacterial Finishes on Textile Material Assessment
AATCC 100 provides a quantitative method for evaluating the degree of antibacterial activity of textile materials treated with antibacterial finishes.The evaluation requirements depend on the expected level of antibacterial performance during the intended use of the textile material. If the purpose is only to inhibit bacterial growth, a qualitative method demonstrating antibacterial activity compared with untreated samples may be acceptable.However, when bactericidal activity is claimed or implied, quantitative evaluation is required. Quantitative assessment also provides a more comprehensive understanding of the potential applications of treated textile materials.
AATCC 147-2016 Antibacterial Activity Assessment of Textile Materials: Parallel Streak Method
AATCC 147 is applicable for evaluating textile materials treated with diffusible antibacterial agents.
ASTM E 2149-2020 Determining the Antimicrobial Activity of Immobilized Antimicrobial Agents under Dynamic Contact Conditions
ASTM E2149 is designed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of specimens treated with antimicrobial agents under dynamic contact conditions.This dynamic shake flask method was developed for routine quality control and screening evaluations to overcome difficulties associated with assessing substrate-bound antimicrobial agents using conventional antimicrobial test methods.These challenges include ensuring contact between the inoculum and treated surfaces (such as AATCC TM100), allowing flexible recovery at different contact times, avoiding inappropriate static conditions (such as AATCC TM147), and improving test sensitivity and reproducibility.

AATCC 174-2016 Test III Mildew and Rot Resistance of Carpet Materials
Antimicrobial Activity Assessment of Carpets — Qualitative Evaluation of Antifungal Activity: Mildew and Rot Resistance of Carpet Materials
AATCC 174 is intended to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of new carpet materials.
The official standard method includes three procedures: qualitative and quantitative evaluation of antibacterial activity (Tests I and II), and qualitative evaluation of antifungal activity (Test III).
Test I is similar to AATCC 147 or the inhibition zone method, except that the test specimen is placed on a single bacterial streak rather than multiple streaks or a bacterial lawn.
Test II is similar to AATCC 100, with adjustments to the inoculum concentration.
Test III is similar to Test III of AATCC 30, with the carpet specimen placed with one surface facing upward and another surface facing downward.

ASTM E2180 is designed to quantitatively evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness of antimicrobial agents incorporated into polymeric or hydrophobic materials.
AATCC 30-2017 Antifungal Activity Assessment on Textile Materials: Mildew and Rot Resistance of Textile Materials (Test III)
AATCC 30, titled “Antifungal Activity, Assessment on Textile Materials: Mildew and Rot Resistance of Textile Materials,” is intended to determine the susceptibility of textile materials (such as fabrics, yarns, and similar products) to mold and fungal growth, and to evaluate the effectiveness of fungicides applied to selected materials.
ASTM D4576-16 Standard Test Method for Mold Growth Resistance of Wet Blue and Wet White
ASTM D4576 includes the determination of mold growth resistance of wet blue and wet white leather materials that meet storage and transportation requirements and are intended for leather manufacturing.
ASTM D4576 may not be suitable for evaluating fungicides that are inactivated by proteins. These include alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride.
ASTM G21-2015 Standard Practice for Determining Resistance of Synthetic Polymeric Materials to Fungi
ASTM G21 is a qualitative test method that uses spores from five different fungal species at high concentrations to determine the resistance of synthetic polymeric materials to fungal growth.
