    BS EN 747-1 & -2: 2012 +A1:2015 Furniture Bunk beds and high beds Safety, strength, durability requirements and test methods

    BS EN 747-1 specifies the safety, strength, and durability requirements for household and non-household bunk beds and loft beds. It applies to bunk beds with the upper surface of the top mattress platform at a height of 600 mm or more, and high beds with the upper surface of the bed base at a height of 600 mm or more. It is not applicable to bunk beds and loft beds intended for special purposes, including but not limited to prisons, military facilities, and fire departments.

    BS EN 747-2 specifies the test methods for evaluating the safety, strength, and durability of domestic and non-domestic bunk beds and loft beds. The loads and forces used in strength and durability tests apply to beds with an internal length greater than 140 cm and a maximum bed base width of 120 cm. It is not applicable to bunk beds or high beds intended for special purposes, including but not limited to prisons, military facilities, and fire departments.

    ASTM F 1427:2021e1 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bunk Beds

    ASTM F1427 specifies the minimum requirements for the design and performance of bunk beds, including requirements for labeling and instructional materials.

    It is intended to minimize child accidents resulting from normal use, as well as reasonably foreseeable misuse or abuse of bunk beds. This consumer safety standard is developed based on current bunk bed technology and does not address bunk beds subject to obvious misuse or careless use despite the warnings and safety instructions provided with each unit.

    According to ASTM F1427, a bunk bed (hereinafter referred to as the bed) is defined as any structure containing at least one sleeping surface, where the bottom surface of any such sleeping surface is more than 30 in. (762 mm) above the floor.

    ASTM F1427 does not apply to bunk beds intended for institutional use, such as those used in prisons, military facilities, dormitories, and similar environments.

     

    16 CFR 1213 & 16 CFR 1513 Safety Requirements for Bunk Beds

    16 CFR 1213 specifies requirements for bunk beds to reduce or eliminate the risk of death or injury caused by children becoming trapped between the upper berth and the wall, beneath guardrails, or in other structural openings of the bed.

Bunk beds complying with these requirements are exempt from compliance with 16 CFR 1500.18(a)(18).

     

    AS/NZS 4220:2010 Bunk beds and other elevated beds

    AS/NZS 4220:2010 specifies the basic safety requirements, functional durability, stability, and performance requirements for bunk beds and other elevated beds used in home environments, childcare facilities, and institutions, thereby reducing the risk of child fatalities and injuries.

     

    Mandatory requirement - Trade Practices Act 1974 Consumer Protection Notice No. 1 of 2003 CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY STANDARD: BUNK BEDS (The tests are based on the Australian Standard AS/NZS 4220:1994 with the variations in Division 3.)

     

    BS EN 1725: 1998 Domestic furniture - Beds and mattresses - Safety requirements and test methods

    BS EN 1725:1998 specifies the mechanical safety requirements and test methods for all types of fully assembled domestic adult beds, including components such as bed frames, bed bases, mattresses, and mattress pads when they form a single unit with the mattress.It is not applicable to rollaway beds, bunk beds, children's beds, adjustable beds for persons with disabilities, waterbeds, or air mattresses, which are covered by separate standards. Additional testing may be applicable to multi-purpose products, such as convertible sofa beds and electrically operated systems.

     

     

    ISO 19833:2018 Furniture — Beds — Test methods for the determination of stability, strength and durability

    ISO 19833:2018 specifies test methods for determining the stability, strength, and durability of all types of fully assembled beds, including bed frames and bed bases.

    This standard applies to adult beds intended for domestic and non-domestic use. It is not suitable for waterbeds, air mattresses, folding beds, bunk beds, beds designed for individuals with special needs, or beds intended for healthcare or medical environments.

    ISO 19833:2018 does not include test methods for evaluating ageing, degradation, fire resistance, or electrical performance.

     

    NF D62-100-1/-2:2019 Furniture — Fixed base mezzanine beds — Part 1: Safety Requirements; Furniture — Fixed base mezzanine beds — Part 2: Test methods

    NF D62-100-1/-2 specifies the test methods for verifying the safety requirements of fixed-base mezzanine beds.

     

    EN 1334 Domestic Furniture - Beds and mattresses - Methods of measurement and recommended tolerances

    EN 1334 describes measurement methods for determining all types of domestic mattresses, bed frames, sofas, and adult-sized bed bases. It does not apply to air beds, water beds, or mattress pads placed on top of a primary support mattress.It also specifies recommended tolerances based on nominal dimensions to ensure proper fitting between bed components.

     

    ASTM F1566-14 Standard Test Methods for Evaluation of Innersprings, Boxsprings, Mattresses or Mattress Sets

    ASTM F1566 covers recognized test methods for evaluating innerspring mattresses, box springs, finished mattresses, mattress covers, or combinations thereof to ensure consistent test results.

    It applies to unupholstered mattress core units, including but not limited to innerspring cores, air-cell cores, and foam cores; unupholstered foundations, including but not limited to box springs and platform bases; finished foundations; and mattress constructions. The data obtained are intended for comparative analysis and do not serve as qualification or nonconformance criteria.

     

    BS EN 1129-1 : 1995 Furniture —Foldaway beds —Safety requirements and testing —Part 1: Safety requirements

    EN 1129-1 specifies the safety and strength requirements for household foldaway beds. It also addresses the strength requirements of applicable wall-mounting hardware.This standard does not specify material requirements or electrical equipment characteristics for the manufacture of foldaway beds. It does not cover folding beds, camp beds, or convertible bed/chair/sofa products.
