In 2016, industry leaders began developing a standardized method for evaluating the thermal insulation performance of camping sleeping pads. Through collaboration among multiple companies, the method was established as ASTM F3340-18. The standard was finalized and published in 2019. It enables campers to test two or more sleeping pads and directly compare their R-values.
Full name of the standard: ASTM F3340 — Standard Test Method for Thermal Resistance of Camping Mattresses Using a Guarded Hot Plate Apparatus.

What is R Value
Technically speaking, R The value is a measure of thermal resistance; R The higher the value, the greater the heat resistance of the material or structure, and the warmer your sleep will be. R The value provides a standardized rating to compare the warmth of various sleeping mats, enabling buyers to easily find one that meets their needs.
Previously, some brands reported R-values using SI units, while others used U.S. customary units or TOG values. In addition, the lack of a standardized testing method made it difficult to accurately compare products between different brands.
Since 2020, most brands have adopted the R-value measurement method developed according to the ASTM F3340-18 standard. This standard defines how sleeping pads are tested and how their R-value performance is reported in the future.
How to test R Value?
ASTM F3340-18R The value is obtained by placing a hot plate on both sides of the mat. ( Representing your body ) And a cold plate ( Representing the ground ) It is used for measurement. Then, electronic sensors measure the energy required to maintain the heating plate at a constant temperature. How to choose the right one R Sleeping pad
1. Summer
For warm conditions, an R-value of 0–2 is generally suitable. However, using a sleeping pad with a higher R-value will not make you feel warmer; it only provides better insulation from the cold ground.
2. Spring and autumn
For mild weather conditions, a sleeping pad with an R-value of 2–4 is suitable for most travelers. This is the most common range for all-season sleeping pads.
3. Winter
For camping and hiking in cold weather, an R-value of 4 or higher may be required. Choosing a sleeping pad with a higher R-value than necessary will not cause overheating but will provide better protection against cold ground temperatures.
4. High-altitude conditions
For high-altitude environments, an R-value of at least 6 or higher may be required. The sleeping pad should also be used with a sleeping bag suitable for extreme conditions and appropriate clothing.
