    ISO 10140-2 Standard Introduction

    Noise pollution can have an impact on human health and living comfort. If the noise generated by a company or organization exceeds applicable limits, measures must be taken to prevent noise pollution. ISO 10140-2 specifies a laboratory method for measuring the airborne sound insulation performance of building products. The test objects include walls, floors, doors, windows, shutters, façade elements, building façades, glass, small technical components (such as air transfer devices and ventilation panels), outdoor air intake devices, electrical conduits, track sealing systems, and composite elements (such as walls or floors with lining systems, suspended ceilings, or floating floors).

     

     
     

    ISO 10140-2 Scope of Application

    ISO 10140-2 applies to carpentry products, partitions, dividing walls, sandwich panels, floors, ceilings, under-screed systems, floor coverings, external walls, photovoltaic modules integrated into roofs, roller shutter boxes, air intake devices, thermal breaks, and other related building components.

     

     
     

    ISO 10140-2 Test Procedure

    Two horizontally or vertically adjacent rooms shall be selected, with one room serving as the source room and the other as the receiving room. The test element shall be installed in the separating opening between the two rooms, and the opening dimensions shall comply with specified requirements. In the source room, a diffuse sound field is generated using a movable loudspeaker or multiple loudspeakers installed at fixed positions.

     

     

    The measurement frequency range typically covers one-third octave bands from 100 Hz to 5000 Hz, and may extend down to 50 Hz under special conditions. Sound pressure levels are measured in both the source room and receiving room using sound level meters and microphones. At least six microphone positions shall be arranged in each room to ensure measurement accuracy and data representativeness.

     

     

    The sound field in the source room shall meet specific requirements, including background noise at least 10 dB lower than the measured signal level and reverberation time controlled within the range of 0.5 to 2.0 seconds. These requirements ensure measurement accuracy and reliability while minimizing the influence of external factors on test results.

    Evaluation Criteria: Parameters such as the sound reduction index (R), apparent sound reduction index (R), and element-normalized level difference (Dn,e) are calculated for performance evaluation.

     

     

    ISO 10140-2 Test Specimens

    According to the type of test specimen, additional requirements apply to specimen preparation, handling, installation, and fixing before testing. The main categories include:

    Full-size test openings(Components that can be installed in standard laboratory openings, such as brick walls and timber floors)

    Reduced-size test openings(Same types of components as above but with smaller dimensions)

    Fixed-size specimens smaller than the test opening(Such as doors and windows)

    Small-size specimens with undefined boundary conditions(Such as ventilation openings)

    Connected to base/floor systems(Such as floating floors)
