When purchasing a new down comforter, consumers often encounter the term TOG (Thermal Overall Grade) and may wonder: What exactly does the TOG level represent?
A common misconception is that the TOG rating indicates the quality or overall value of a down comforter. However, this is not the case. A down comforter provides warmth by trapping air and retaining body heat. TOG (Thermal Overall Grade) refers to the thermal insulation capability of a down comforter, specifically its ability to retain heat and provide warmth.

The TOG rating is an indicator of the thermal insulation performance of a down comforter. It stands for Thermal Overall Grade and is widely used in the United Kingdom to describe the warmth level of bedding products.
The warmth provided by a down comforter depends on several factors, including the amount and quality of down filling and the manufacturing process. Through standardized thermal performance ratings, down comforters can be classified according to their warmth levels and matched with different seasons and usage conditions.
Down Comforter TOG Level System Description
Understanding TOG ratings helps consumers select suitable down comforters according to climate conditions and personal comfort preferences. The TOG rating system generally ranges from 1 to 15. A lower TOG value represents a cooler comforter, while a higher TOG value indicates greater thermal insulation. Most down comforters commonly start from 4.5 TOG.
4.5 TOG: A 4.5 TOG down comforter provides lightweight insulation and helps prevent overheating during sleep. It is suitable for warm seasons, summer use, or individuals who tend to feel hot while sleeping.
7.0 TOG: A 7.0 TOG down comforter provides moderate warmth while remaining relatively breathable. It is suitable for air-conditioned rooms or environments where additional warmth is needed during seasonal temperature changes, making it a popular choice for year-round bedding.
10.5 TOG: A 10.5 TOG down comforter provides enhanced insulation while maintaining good breathability. It offers sufficient warmth during colder conditions while remaining comfortable in moderately warmer environments and is commonly considered an ideal winter bedding option.
13.5 TOG: A 13.5 TOG down comforter provides a higher level of warmth and is suitable for colder climates and winter conditions. However, it may feel too warm as temperatures increase.
15 TOG: A 15 TOG down comforter represents one of the highest warmth ratings available. It provides maximum insulation for very cold conditions but may be excessively warm in mild or hot weather. Many users may also choose to combine it with a lighter comforter for seasonal flexibility.
What Is a Four-Season Quilt?
A four-season down comforter combines the advantages of summer and winter quilts and typically consists of two separate sections. These sections can be used individually or attached together according to seasonal temperature changes.
Typically, the lighter section provides approximately 4.5 TOG warmth, while the warmer section provides approximately 9 TOG. When combined, they create a 13.5 TOG down comforter suitable for colder nights.
TOG Level Assessment Method
The TOG rating of a down comforter is determined through a standardized thermal resistance test. During testing, heat is applied to one side of the material, and the heat transfer through the opposite side is measured. The TOG value is calculated based on the temperature difference between both sides of the material when the heat flow reaches 1 watt per square meter.The conversion relationship is: 1 TOG = 0.1 m²K/W = 0.1 RSI
To evaluate the TOG level of a down comforter, precise environmental control and measurement are required. The comforter is carefully placed on a testing surface maintained at an ambient temperature of 19.5–20.5°C. A large rectangular electric heating plate is used, with the heating surface temperature controlled at 32.5–33.5°C. Multiple measurement points across the down comforter are tested to determine the average thermal resistance of the material.
