For this reason, product reference certifications involving allergy and asthma patient organizations have gradually gained attention. The DAAB German Allergy and Asthma Certification is one of the representative programs in this field.
German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB)
The German Allergy and Asthma Association (Deutscher Allergie- und Asthmabund e.V., DAAB) is the oldest and largest patient organization in Germany for individuals affected by allergies, anaphylaxis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis. As a national non-profit organization, DAAB is committed to raising public awareness, providing education and advocacy, and supporting evidence-based allergy research.
DAAB German Allergy and Asthma Label
The German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB) has long been concerned with the daily needs of people with allergies, asthma, atopic dermatitis, and other sensitive conditions. For these individuals, products with higher irritant potential in daily life may cause discomfort or even trigger adverse reactions. Therefore, they tend to prefer products with low allergenic potential and better tolerability. At the same time, many people with sensitive skin also wish to minimize potential risks when selecting products. This creates a need for a clear and trustworthy reference standard. The “DAAB German Allergy and Asthma Association Certification Label” was developed in response to this need and has been providing product guidance to consumers for more than 20 years.
To help consumers more safely identify suitable products, DAAB has established clear evaluation criteria. Only products that comply with the relevant standards in terms of ingredient selection and tolerability can obtain the DAAB German Allergy and Asthma Association Certification Label.
Applicable Product Categories of the German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB)
(1) Facial care products: day cream, night cream, face masks, lip balm, cleansing milk, toner…
(2) Body care products: shower gel, shampoo, body lotion, body oil, hand cream, shaving foam, deodorant…
(3) Household products: multi-purpose cleaners, laundry detergents, fabric softeners…
(4) Sun protection: after-sun lotion, after-sun cream, SPF 30–SPF 50+ sunscreen…
(5) Men’s products: shaving foam, shaving gel, aftershave, face cream…
(6) Foot care
(7) Insect protection
(8) Wet toilet tissue
(9) Other products
Special Requirements of the German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB)
The following substances must not be included in the formulation:
● Fragrances, flavoring agents, essential oils
● Preservatives known to cause contact allergies
● Colorants known to be contact allergens
● Other ingredients known as contact allergens, such as lanolin, rosin, etc.
● Highly irritating substances that may cause irritation to mucous membranes, eyes, or skin even in small amounts
Substances Not Accepted by the German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB)
For products marketed as suitable for individuals with allergies, asthma, eczema, and sensitive skin, the following substances, among others, are not accepted by DAAB:
(1) Fragrances
Refers to both synthetic fragrances and natural substances used to impart or modify scent, typically labeled as “fragrance” or “parfum.” This also includes essential oils and their components used for fragrance purposes. For example, terpene compounds (components of many essential oils), such as β-ionone, menthone, and marjoram oil constituents, are not considered acceptable fragrances. Specifically excluded are 26 fragrance allergens that must be declared due to their sensitizing potential.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is a highly irritating surfactant. Although it is not a sensitizer itself, its irritant potential makes it unacceptable in DAAB-labeled products.

How to obtain DAAB certification and required documents

Certified products must not contain known contact allergens, highly irritating substances, or fragrances and flavoring agents that may cause particular issues for individuals with allergies. Therefore, the following documents must be submitted to SATISFY:
● Full product formulation information: including qualitative and quantitative composition, i.e., INCI ingredient list and concentration of each ingredient; for detergents or cleaning products, declaration according to the current Detergent Regulation (WRMG) and corresponding concentration data are also required.
● Product safety assessment documentation: full documentation or safety reports required under cosmetic regulations for product safety evaluation.
● Tolerability evidence: such as dermal test results conducted on sensitive skin to demonstrate good skin compatibility.
● Non-cosmetic ingredient declaration: for non-cosmetic components used in the product (e.g., carrier materials), safety documentation must be provided, declaring that they do not contain known allergens or irritants.
● Sample submission requirements: before conducting user testing, product samples must be submitted to SATISFY for preliminary evaluation of formulation, fragrance, and other aspects.
