CAN/ULC-S137 Standard Introduction
Furniture must meet specific safety standards before market placement, and mattresses are no exception. CAN/ULC‑S137 is a fire test that measures the ability of a mattress or mattress system to resist rapid heat release when exposed to a designated ignition source under well‑ventilated conditions.
CAN/ULC-S137 Scope of Application
Applies only to finished mattresses and mattress sets.
Note: Not applicable to individual component materials (e.g., surface fabrics, filling materials, foams, cotton padding).
CAN/ULC-S137 Test Method
The test environment shall be above 15 °C with humidity below 75%. Before testing, ensure the analyser, pump, and filters are functional, complete pre‑test calibration, start data acquisition, and set up airflow/exhaust. Horizontal airflow at the mattress top shall be below 0.5 m/s.
After environmental/equipment adjustment, test the specimen within 20 minutes. Set propane pressure: top burner 70 kPa, side burner 50 kPa. Initiate ignition and start the test. Terminate after 30 minutes or when safety is threatened. Record ignition, flame spread, and combustion characteristics.
CAN/ULC-S137 Basis for determination
Three specimens shall be tested, with results meeting:
Peak heat release rate: ≤ 200 kW within the 30‑minute test
Total heat release: ≤ 15 MJ within the first 10 minutes
