Introduction to the GB/T 14645 Standard
In apparel, home textiles, and public-space decorative materials, fabrics exposed to flames, sparks, or high heat can easily become ignition sources. In incidents such as clothing catching fire, curtains igniting, or decorative fabrics burning, the burning rate, sustained combustion, and damage extent directly affect evacuation time and consequences. GB/T 14645‑2014 is a key Chinese national standard addressing textile flammability, focusing on afterflame, smoldering, damaged area, and flame spread under brief flame exposure.

Scope of application of GB/T 14645
GB/T 14645 applies to various textile fabrics and products, including but not limited to: woven and knitted apparel fabrics; decorative textiles (curtains, tablecloths, coverings); construction textiles; and fabrics with or without flame‑retardant finishing.

GB/T 14645 Test Method A
Method A applies to fabrics unlikely to thermally melt or drip, such as cotton, linen, viscose, and some heavyweight fabrics. It uses surface or edge ignition at a 45° angle. The specimen is clamped at 45°, and the flame acts on the surface for a specified height and duration, simulating exposure to small ignition sources.
Basis for assessment: The combustion performance evaluation of Method A is typically based on the following criteria:
Does the afterburning time exceed the specified limit?
Whether smoldering occurs and its duration
The area or length of damage on the specimen

GB/T 14645 Test Method B
Method B applies to yarns and fabrics prone to melting, curling, or dripping when heated (e.g., polyester, nylon). The specimen is positioned at 45°, and multiple ignitions are applied until the cumulative melted or flame‑spread distance reaches 90 mm. The propagation tendency is observed to assess sustained combustion.
Core metric: number of ignitions required to reach 90 mm burn/melt distance.
