BS 5852 Flammability Test for Components of Upholstered Furniture

Legal Basis:
Based on the UK Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 (amended in 1989, 1993, and 2010), testing is conducted to BS 5852: Part 1: 1979 and Part 2: 1982. Upholstered furniture exported to the UK must meet the corresponding component flame‑retardancy requirements.
The UK was the first country to establish flame‑retardant design standards for upholstered furniture, which served as a key reference for other European countries and CEN when developing their own standards. Consequently, many furniture flammability standards worldwide reflect the influence of BS 5852.
Scope of Application:
■ Group A
1.Upholstered seating: chairs, settees, padded stools, ottomans, footstools, sofa‑beds, futons and other convertibles, bean bags, and floor cushions.
2.Nursery furniture and upholstered items designed for infants/young children.
3.Domestic upholstered furniture supplied in kit form for self‑assembly.
4.Second‑hand furniture (post‑1950).
5.Upholstered headboards, footboards, and bed side rails.
■ Group B
1.Furniture for outdoor use (garden/patio) that is also suitable for indoor use (homes and caravans).
2.Upholstery in caravans (excluding vehicles or boats).
3.Cane furniture incorporating upholstery.
■ Group C
Divans, bed bases, mattresses, pillows, and mattress pads (toppers) – filling material only.
■ Group D
Scatter cushions and seat pads – filling material only.
■ Group E
1.Permanent covers (textiles, coated textiles, leather, etc.).
2.Loose and stretch covers.
3.Covers for non‑visible parts of furniture.
■ Group F
Foam and non‑foam filling materials.
