According to the National Standardization Administration Committee Notice No. 18 of 2020, GB 8965.1-2020 "Protective Clothing - Flame-retardant clothing" takes effect on August 1, 2021.
Definition
A protective garment that, after exposure to flame and incandescent objects, can prevent ignition, flaming combustion, and smoldering combustion for a specified period.
Scope of Application
Flame‑retardant protective clothing suitable for areas with open flames, sparks, flammable materials, and risk of flashover.
Grading
Based on protective performance, flame‑retardant clothing is classified into two levels: A and B.
Differences between the new and old versions of the standard:
Compared with GB 8965.1-2009, the main technical changes are as follows:
1. Supplemented and revised: normative references, some terms and definitions, technical requirements and performance indicators for stitch length, strength requirements for back crotch and shoulder seams of trousers, number of test samples for thermal stability and thermal protective performance, inspection rules, and marking/labeling content. Meanwhile, the test method for thermal stability in Appendix B of GB 8965.1-2009 has been revised to Appendix A of this standard.
2. Added: technical requirements for knitted fabrics and apparel, limits on decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes and odor criteria, physicochemical requirements for linings, testing methods for fabric flame retardancy (GB/T 5455-2014), general requirements for seam strength, and test methods/criteria for seam flame retardancy; the manikin flashover test is used to evaluate overall thermal protective performance.
3. Deleted: Class C flame‑retardant protective clothing and its requirements, fabric bending length requirements, and the test method for protective performance in Appendix A of GB 8965.1-2009.
