AS/NZS 4088.1 Standard Description
According to the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), Australia has established a number of mandatory consumer product safety standards to protect users from potential risks associated with non-compliant products.AS/NZS 4088.1 provides a test method for furniture manufacturers, suppliers, and purchasers in Australia and New Zealand to evaluate the performance of filling materials and cover materials used in upholstered domestic furniture when exposed to a smouldering ignition source, thereby reducing fires caused by household furniture products.
AS/NZS 4088.1 Scope of Application
AS/NZS 4088.1 applies to the smouldering ignitability assessment of upholstery materials used in domestic furniture, such as chairs and sofas.Cover materials, filling materials, and barrier materials are all included within the scope of AS/NZS 4088.1.
AS/NZS 4088.1 Test Method
AS/NZS 4088.1 uses the materials under evaluation to construct a chair assembly. A lit cigarette is placed on the chair at the junction between the seat and backrest to evaluate the smouldering ignition resistance of the materials.
AS/NZS 4088.1 Evaluation criteria
If, after placing and igniting the cigarette, no progressive smouldering or ignition is observed within 1 hour, and the internal materials do not continue to burn, the material passes the test.
