to 2022 This fall, crib mattresses and aftermarket mattresses intended for play yards and portable cribs will be required to comply with a new federal safety standard. The mandatory standard will mandate improved labeling, marking, and instructions to better communicate the risk of injury to consumers. The new standard addresses several hazards, such as lacerations caused by coil springs and overly soft mattresses. It also requires that any mattress sold for use in play yards meet the same performance requirements as the original mattress, ensuring that infants cannot suffocate in the gap between the mattress and the flexible sides of the play yard.

The US. Non‑original mattresses must not be smaller than the original mattress; if the original mattress includes a slatted base, the non‑original mattress must also include one; and if the original mattress comes with storage recommendations, the non‑original mattress must likewise provide such recommendations.
