EN 1888-1 Introduction
EN 1888-1 specifies the basic safety requirements and test methods for pushchairs and prams, applicable to vehicles designed to carry one or more children. The standard stipulates that each child’s weight must not exceed 15 kg; if equipped with an integrated standing platform, the total weight of the child on the platform shall not exceed 20 kg. When a pushchair, pram, or any of its components has multiple functions or can be converted into other modes of use, it must fully comply with EN 1888-1 to ensure safe use under all operating conditions.
EN 1888-1 Determination of the Occupant Space
First, measure the internal length (D) on a plane 40 mm from the base. Then use a height gauge to measure the minimum internal height in both the longitudinal and lateral directions. If the underbody is inclined, measure relative to the lowest point of the test load. Finally, measure the vertical distance from the top edge of the test rod to the top edge of the recommended mattress.
According to the internal length (D), requirements are divided into two types:
When D ≤ 800 mm: The height in the central side area (Region A) shall be at least 150 mm and cover at least 170 mm. The remaining sides and both ends (Region C) shall each have a height of at least 100 mm.
When D > 800 mm: The height in the central side area (Region A) shall be ≥ 180 mm and the coverage shall be ≥ 180 mm. All remaining sides and both ends (Region C) shall be ≥ 130 mm.
EN 1888-1 Holes and Openings
First, perform a finger-tip probe test: using a 7 mm diameter probe, insert it into the opening with a force not exceeding 30 N. If the insertion depth reaches or exceeds 10 mm, a pinch hazard exists, requiring an additional shape-assessment probe test (force ≤ 5 N). If both probes can be inserted, the result is non-conforming.
Second, perform a cone penetration test: with a force ≤ 30 N, if the 7 mm diameter segment can be fully inserted, it is non-conforming. Finally, test the pedal opening using 25 mm and 45 mm cone probes. The result is acceptable only when the 25 mm probe can enter but the 45 mm probe cannot. All tests must strictly follow the specified force levels and acceptance criteria.
EN 1888-1 Wheel Movement Test
Place the vehicle on a test platform inclined at 9°, facing downhill. Activate the parking device and let it reach equilibrium, then use a rectangular baffle to mark the position of the downhill wheel (marking line perpendicular to the slope). Manually hold the vehicle, release the braking device, and allow it to descend along the slope until the parking device engages at the next working position; mark the new wheel position with a rectangular stop block (marking line perpendicular to the slope). Finally, measure the distance between the two marked lines.
EN 1888-1 Vehicle Stability
Stability test for strollers with integrated standing platforms: Place the vehicle on a level surface with the backrest in the most upright position. Evenly place the test weights at the center of the platform and, via a rigid rod connected to the handle, apply a vertical force of 50 N at the midpoint. Keep the force direction vertical (if structural constraints apply, use the most vertical orientation possible). Check whether the vehicle tips over to verify overall stability.
Longitudinal stability test of the portable vehicle body: Place test weight A at the geometric center of the vehicle body (for multiple-child designs, one weight per seat; canopy must be retracted). Use a 20 mm wide woven strap to connect the two ends of the rigid handle and suspend it from a metal test rod (the horizontal handle must remain vertically suspended). When the vehicle body is lifted, the maximum tilt angle of its front or rear end shall not exceed 10°.
EN 1888-1 Product Information Requirements
Products must be clearly and permanently marked with the following information:
◎ Name or trademark of the manufacturer, importer, or sales organization;
◎ Product model designation;
◎ Permanently legible warning statements, such as “Never leave children unattended.”, “Always use the restraint system.”, “This product is not intended for use while running or skating.”;
◎ Maximum weight capacity marking: the diagram indicates the maximum child weight for which the vehicle is suitable, as shown below:
◎ Product manuals shall be provided in the official languages of the country, including all relevant warning labels, product compatibility and usage recommendations, maximum permissible loads, assembly instructions, and guidelines for the installation and use of restraint systems.
