Test Background

What Is a Patch Test?

Depending on the testing purpose, patch tests can be classified into the following types:
(1) Patch Test
Applicable Products: Cosmetics, skincare products
The patch test is primarily used to evaluate potential skin irritation or inflammatory reactions. The test substance, including cosmetic ingredients, finished products, or chemical substances, is applied to a specialized patch or gauze and then attached to the subject’s skin, typically on the back or inner upper arm. The test may be conducted using a closed-patch or semi-occlusive patch method. As a fundamental safety evaluation, patch testing is commonly performed before cosmetic and skincare products are launched on the market.
(2) Tape Stripping Patch Test
Applicable Products: Particularly suitable for products with low skin permeability.
The tape stripping test simulates conditions associated with highly sensitive skin. A specialized adhesive tape is repeatedly applied to and removed from the stratum corneum, gradually removing portions of keratinocytes and weakening the skin barrier. This increases skin permeability to external substances, after which a patch test is performed to evaluate skin reactions.
(3) Photo Patch Test
Applicable Products: Commonly used for leave-on products, such as sunscreen products.
Photo patch testing is generally performed on areas exposed to sunlight to simulate real-world application conditions. The test substance is applied to the skin, and after a specified exposure period, part of the patch area is removed. The test site is then exposed to a controlled dose of UVA radiation, and the results are compared with an unexposed area. This method helps determine whether a substance may cause phototoxic reactions or photoallergic responses under UV exposure conditions, thereby evaluating product safety during sun exposure.
