BS EN 1021-1 Standard Description
Fires caused by upholstered furniture can result in significant damage to human life and property. In severe cases, they may lead to serious injuries or fatalities. Therefore, many countries have established requirements for the fire performance and ignition resistance of upholstered products.The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has developed the BS EN 1021 series to reduce fire risks associated with upholstered furniture. BS EN 1021-1 is one of the standards in this series and evaluates the ignitability of upholstered furniture material combinations when exposed to specific ignition sources.The ignition source used in BS EN 1021-1 is a smouldering cigarette.
BS EN 1021-1 Scope of Application
BS EN 1021-1 is used to assess the ignitability of material combinations used in upholstered furniture, such as upholstery fabrics and filling materials, when exposed to a smouldering cigarette ignition source.BS EN 1021-1 evaluates only the ignitability of the material combination used in upholstery and does not assess the flammability performance of specific finished furniture products.
BS EN 1021-1 Test Method
Before testing, all outer covering materials that have been chemically treated to reduce flammability shall undergo a water-soaking and drying treatment.A test assembly consisting of foam and fabric is prepared to simulate a seat structure.A smouldering cigarette is ignited and placed in the gap between the seat and backrest of the test assembly. The cigarette is allowed to burn along its entire length, and the burning behaviour of the fabric is observed and recorded.
BS EN 1021-1 Basis for Determination
(a) Whether progressively increasing smouldering behaviour is observed in the specimen. If the smouldering behaviour continues to intensify and creates a safety risk, the test shall be terminated.
(b) Whether the specimen continues to smoulder during the test until it is substantially consumed.
(c) Whether the specimen smoulders to the edges during testing, including the top, bottom, or side edges, resulting in burn-through.
(d) Whether any smouldering is observed after 1 hour of testing.
(e) Whether severe smouldering is observed on the specimen after completion of the test.
(f) Whether open flame combustion occurs during testing due to progressively increasing smouldering behaviour.
(g) After completion of the test, remove the specimen and inspect the interior for any signs of progressively increasing smouldering. If such behaviour is observed, extinguish the specimen and classify it as combustible, then complete the test report.
