BS 7176:2007+A1:2011 Standard Introduction
In the United Kingdom, all non-domestic upholstered seating products shall be classified according to the hazard risk category associated with their intended use environment.The hazard levels are divided into four categories: Low Hazard, Medium Hazard, High Hazard, and Very High Hazard.Depending on the hazard level of the intended application, upholstered seating products shall comply with the corresponding ignition resistance testing requirements.

BS 7176:2007+A1:2011 Scope of Application
BS 7176:2007+A1:2011 applies to all upholstered non-domestic seating products.

BS 7176:2007+A1:2011 Four Different Hazard Levels and Testing Methods
(a) Low Hazard
Applications: Offices, schools, colleges, universities, museums, exhibitions, and day centres.
Ignition Resistance Requirements:Comply with BS EN 1021-1 using a smouldering cigarette ignition source and comply with BS EN 1021-2 using a match flame equivalent ignition source.
(b) Medium Hazard
Applications: Offshore facilities, certain hospital wards, and dormitory sleeping accommodation.
Ignition Resistance Requirements:Comply with BS EN 1021-1 using a smouldering cigarette ignition source, comply with BS EN 1021-2 using a match flame equivalent ignition source, and comply with BS 5852 Ignition Resistance of Upholstered Seating Using a Crib 5 Ignition Source.
(c) High Hazard
Applications: Casinos, hospitals, hotels, public entertainment venues, public buildings, public halls, taverns and bars, restaurants, and service areas.
Ignition Resistance Requirements:Comply with BS EN 1021-1 using a smouldering cigarette ignition source, comply with BS EN 1021-2 using a match flame equivalent ignition source, and comply with BS 5852 Ignition Resistance of Upholstered Seating Using a Crib 7 Ignition Source.
(d) Very High Hazard
Applications: Secure psychiatric hospitals and prison cells.
Ignition Resistance Requirements:Comply with BS EN 1021-1 using a smouldering cigarette ignition source, comply with BS EN 1021-2 using a match flame equivalent ignition source, and comply with BS 5852 using a Crib 7 ignition source.
