BS 5852-2006 Fire‑Resistance Test Standard for Upholstered Seating

    Category:

    EU & UK

    BS 5852-2006 Standard Description

BS 5852-2006: Methods of test for assessment of the ignitability of upholstered seating by smoldering and flaming ignition sources

BS 5852-2006 describes methods for evaluating the ignitability of single‑material assemblies (covering, interlining, padding) and complete seating units, using cigarettes, matches, and burning wooden cribs as ignition sources.

    BS 5852-2006 Scope of Application

BS 5852-2006 first specifies ignition criteria and health and safety requirements for operators, then describes the various equipment and highlights smouldering ignition sources (e.g., cigarettes, butane gas flames, and burning wooden cribs). The standard also covers test methods for the flammability of interior composite materials and complete furniture items, concluding with final inspection and test report requirements.

S 5852-2006 specifies methods for evaluating the ignitability of single material assemblies, applicable to:

    Covers used in upholstered seating

    Interlinings used in upholstered seating

    Padding used in upholstered seating

    Complete seating products

    BS 5852-2006 Test Method

The test is conducted in a test cabinet with calibrated airflow. Cover and padding are arranged at a 90° angle to simulate a seat/backrest, with the ignition source placed at the joint. Six ignition sources (2–7) are used: sources 2–3 are gas flames; sources 4–7 are wooden cribs (higher numbers indicate larger sources).

    Limits:

Smouldering time: ≤ 30 min for gas flames; ≤ 60 min for wooden cribs.

Char length in any direction from the flame: ≤ 100 mm.

    Gas flame extinguishes at 40 s (source 2) or 70 s (source 3).

After burner removal, flaming shall not exceed 120 s.

    For source 5, combustion ≤ 10 min; for sources 6–7, ≤ 13 min.
