Purpose of the test
This standard assesses the flammability of beds and mattresses when exposed to ignition sources (cigarettes and small gas flames).
These methods evaluate only flammability characteristics. To assess how a mattress might contribute to a fire, more powerful ignition sources are required for comprehensive testing.
For upholstered beds or mattresses, the Product Safety Act applies, and fire is one of the safety risks. According to the Swedish Consumer Agency, mattresses sold to individual consumers in the Swedish market must resist a lit cigarette placed on their surface without igniting, with reference to EN 597-1. In public environments (e.g., hotels), at least EN 597-1 and EN 597-2 should be met.
Scope of Application
● Mattresses: This standard applies to all types and sizes (single, double, queen, king, etc.). Note that different constructions – innerspring, foam, memory foam, latex – may be subject to different requirements under EN 597.
● Mattress covers or mattress pads: Thinner, softer layers placed on top for extra comfort or protection. These must also comply with EN 597 when sold as standalone products.
● Bedding: In some cultures, bedding is used for sofa beds and cushions; if sold within the EU, it may need to meet EN 597.
● Daybeds and sofa beds: In certain cases, daybeds or sofa beds with integrated mattresses may require compliance with EN 597 if sold as furniture in the EU.
● Convertible furniture: Any furniture that can be converted into a sleeping surface with a built-in mattress may be required to comply with EN 597.
Test Method
The test is conducted in a fume hood with calibrated airflow. The specimen is placed on a steel test bench. Depending on the bed/mattress design, the ignition source is positioned on the surface, seams, pile, or edges.
The cigarette is lit and allowed to burn completely throughout the test. If progressive flaming occurs and does not self‑extinguish within one hour, this is recorded. The damage must not penetrate the specimen.
The gas flame extinguishes after 15 seconds. Any flame persisting for more than 120 seconds after removal of the gas burner is considered ignition.
