EN 597 The purpose of the test
This standard assesses the flammability of beds and mattresses when exposed to cigarettes and small gas flames. These methods evaluate only flammability characteristics; comprehensive testing with more powerful ignition sources is required to assess a mattress's contribution to a fire.
For upholstered beds or mattresses, the Product Safety Act applies. According to the Swedish Consumer Agency, mattresses sold to individual consumers must resist a lit cigarette (per EN 597‑1). In public environments (e.g., hotels), both EN 597‑1 and EN 597‑2 apply.
EN 597 Scope of Application
●Mattresses: All types and sizes (single, double, queen, king), including various constructions (innerspring, foam, memory foam, latex).
●Mattress covers or pads: Thinner layers for comfort/protection; must comply when sold as standalone products.
●Bedding: Used on sofa beds/cushions; may need to meet EN 597 if sold within the EU.
●Daybeds and sofa beds: With integrated mattresses; may require compliance when sold as furniture in the EU.
●Convertible furniture: Any furniture convertible into a sleeping surface with a built‑in mattress may need to comply.
EN 597 Test Method
The test is conducted in a fume hood with calibrated airflow. The specimen is placed on a steel test bench. Ignition sources are positioned on the surface, seams, pile, or edges, depending on mattress design.
Cigarette: Lit and allowed to burn completely. If progressive flaming occurs and does not self‑extinguish within one hour, record failure. Damage must not penetrate the specimen.
Gas flame: Extinguishes after 15 seconds. Any flame persisting more than 120 seconds after burner removal is considered ignition.
