GB 17927.1 & GB 17927.2 Standard Introduction
Many countries require flammability testing for upholstered furniture to reduce fire risks. GB 17927 is a Chinese standard that helps protect lives and property. GB 17927.1 uses a smouldering cigarette as the ignition source, while GB 17927.2 uses a simulated match flame.
GB 17927.1 & GB 17927.2 Scope of Application
Applicable to testing and evaluation of the flame‑resistance properties of household mattresses, sofas, and other upholstered furniture.
GB 17927.1 Test Method
Conditioned specimens shall be tested within 20 minutes of removal from the preconditioning environment. Ignite the cigarette as specified; the glowing tip shall show a burn rate of 5–8 mm.
◎Mattress
Place the lit cigarette horizontally on a flat area of the mattress surface, at least 100 mm from the nearest edge or any previous marks. If the specimen has rolled/bound edges, quilting, or buttonholes, also test on those features.
◎ Sofa
Place the cigarette along the junction of the seat cushion and backrest, ensuring close contact, or on other critical areas (e.g., seam inner edges, quilting depressions). Maintain at least 50 mm distance from edges or previous marks.
GB 17927.2 Test Method
Conditioned specimens shall be tested within 20 minutes of removal. Prepare the ignition source per GB 17927.2. Ignite the burner gas, adjust flow to the specified value, and allow stable combustion for at least 2 minutes.
◎ Mattress
Place the burner tube horizontally on a flat area, at least 100 mm from edges or previous marks. If rolled/bound edges, quilting, or buttonholes exist, also test on those. Start the timer. Burn for (15±1) s, then carefully remove the burner.
◎ Sofa
Place the burner tube along the seat/backrest junction or other critical areas (seam inner edges, quilting depressions), at least 50 mm from edges or previous marks. Start timer, burn for (15±1) s, then remove.
GB 17927.1 & GB 17927.2 Basis for determination
GB 17927.1 Basis for determination: After placing and igniting the cigarette, observe for 1 hour. If smouldering or flaming occurs at any time, the specimen fails.
GB 17927.2 Basis for determination: After burner removal, from 120 seconds to 1 hour, if sustained flaming or smouldering is observed, the specimen fails the match‑flame ignition resistance test.
