GB 17927.1 & GB 17927.2 Standard Introduction
To reduce fires caused by upholstered furniture such as mattresses and sofas, many countries have established flammability requirements for such products. GB 17927 is a Chinese standard designed to reduce fire risks and protect people’s lives and property.GB 17927.1 and GB 17927.2 provide reference requirements for manufacturers and consumers. GB 17927.1 uses a smouldering cigarette as the ignition source, while GB 17927.2 uses a simulated match flame as the ignition source.
GB 17927.1 & GB 17927.2 Scope of Application
GB 17927.1 and GB 17927.2 apply to the testing and evaluation of the ignition resistance performance of household mattresses, sofas, and other upholstered furniture.
GB 17927.1 Test Method
After removing the specimen from the conditioning environment, place it steadily on the test platform and begin testing within 20 minutes.Ignite the cigarette specified in GB 17927.1. During ignition, the cigarette shall be fully glowing and maintain a burning rate between 5 mm and 8 mm.The placement positions vary depending on the type of specimen, as follows:
◎ Mattress
Place the lit cigarette horizontally on a flat area of the mattress surface, at least 100 mm away from the nearest edge or any marks left from previous tests. If the specimen has a rolled or bound edge, or includes quilting seams or buttonholes, the cigarette shall also be tested on these areas, including the bound edge, quilted seam grooves, and buttonholes.
◎ Sofa
Place the lit cigarette along the junction between the sofa seat cushion and backrest, ensuring close contact with the surface, or place it at other areas most likely to ignite, such as the inner edges of seams and recessed areas formed by quilting lines. The distance between the ignition source and each end of the specimen, or any marks left from previous tests, shall be at least 50 mm.
GB 17927.2 Test Method
After removing the specimen from the conditioning environment, place it steadily on the test platform and begin testing within 20 minutes.Prepare the ignition source according to the requirements of GB 17927.2. Ignite the gas released from the combustion tube, adjust the flow control system to achieve the specified flow rate, and maintain stable combustion for at least 2 minutes.The placement positions vary depending on the type of specimen, as follows:
◎ Mattress
Place the combustion tube horizontally on a flat area of the mattress surface, at least 100 mm away from the nearest edge or any marks left from previous tests. If the specimen has rolled or bound edges, quilting seams, or buttonholes, position the combustion tube on these areas for testing.Start the timer simultaneously. The combustion tube shall remain horizontally in contact with the specimen and burn on the specimen for (15 ± 1) seconds. After completion, carefully remove the specimen from the test area and stop ignition.
◎ Sofa
Place the combustion tube along the junction between the sofa seat cushion and backrest, or at other areas most likely to ignite, such as the inner edges of seams and recessed areas formed by quilting lines. The distance between the ignition source and each end of the specimen, or any marks left from previous tests, shall be at least 50 mm.Start the timer simultaneously. The combustion tube shall burn on the specimen for (15 ± 1) seconds. After completion, carefully remove the specimen from the test area and stop ignition.
GB 17927.1 & GB 17927.2 Basis for Determination
GB 17927.1 Basis for Determination:After placing and igniting the cigarette, observe the specimen for 1 hour to determine whether smouldering or flaming combustion occurs. If smouldering or flaming combustion occurs at any time during the 1-hour test period, the specimen is considered to have failed.
GB 17927.2 Basis for Determination:If sustained flaming or smouldering combustion occurs from 120 seconds after removal of the combustion tube until the end of the 1-hour observation period, the specimen is considered to have failed the simulated match-flame ignition resistance test.
