ISO 8191-1 & ISO 8191-2 Standard Description
Fires caused by the flammability of textiles or their inadequate flame resistance performance account for a significant proportion of fire incidents, resulting in substantial losses to life and property.The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) developed the ISO 8191 series to assess the ignitability of material combinations used in upholstered furniture, with the aim of reducing fires caused by upholstered products.ISO 8191 evaluates the ignitability of upholstery covers and filling materials used in upholstered seating. Among them, ISO 8191-1 uses a smouldering cigarette as the ignition source, while ISO 8191-2 uses a simulated match flame as the ignition source.
ISO 8191-1 & ISO 8191-2 Scope of Application
ISO 8191-1 and ISO 8191-2 assess only the ignitability of material combinations used in upholstered furniture, including upholstery coverings and fillings. These standards do not evaluate the flammability performance of complete finished furniture products.
ISO 8191-1 & ISO 8191-2 Test Method
ISO 8191-1 and ISO 8191-2 tests shall be conducted in a test cabinet equipped with calibrated airflow.Place the upholstery cover and filling material into the test apparatus, forming a 90° arrangement between the seat and backrest to simulate an upholstered seating structure.The gap formed between the seat and backrest is tested using different ignition sources according to the applicable standard. ISO 8191-1 uses a smouldering cigarette as the ignition source, while ISO 8191-2 uses a simulated match flame as the ignition source.
ISO 8191-1 & ISO 8191-2 Basis for Determination
(a) ISO 8191-1 Basis for Determination:
After 1 hour from the start of the test, the test assembly shall not exhibit smouldering.In addition, any scorch marks in any direction shall not exceed 100 mm.
(b) ISO 8191-2 Basis for Determination:
After removal of the ignition source, the duration of flaming shall not exceed 120 seconds.Except for the area directly affected by the upward-positioned ignition source, scorch marks in other directions on the test assembly shall not exceed 100 mm.
