ISO 8191-1 & ISO 8191-2 Standard Description
Fires caused by flammable textiles or poor flame retardancy have led to significant losses. ISO established ISO 8191 to assess the flammability of material assemblies in upholstered furniture, helping reduce related fire risks. The test evaluates seat covers and padding used in upholstered seats – ISO 8191‑1 uses a cigarette as the ignition source, while ISO 8191‑2 uses a simulated match flame.
ISO 8191-1 & ISO 8191-2 Scope of Application
ISO 8191‑1 and ISO 8191‑2 assess only the flammability of material combinations (covering and padding) in upholstered furniture – not finished furniture.
ISO 8191-1 & ISO 8191-2 Test Method
All tests are conducted in a test cabinet with calibrated airflow. Place the cover and padding into the test apparatus, positioned at a 90° angle to simulate a small sofa. Testing focuses on the gap between the seat and backrest – ISO 8191‑1 uses a cigarette, and ISO 8191‑2 uses a simulated match flame.
ISO 8191-1 & ISO 8191-2 Basis for determination
(a) ISO 8191‑1:
Within 1 hour after the test starts, no smouldering shall occur, and scorch marks in any direction shall not exceed 100 mm.
(b) ISO 8191‑2:
After removal of the combustion tube, flame burning time shall not exceed 120 seconds. Except for the area directly above the combustion tube, scorch marks in other directions shall not exceed 100 mm.
